Conceptual
Illustration (comprehensives, production art and storyboards)
Turnaround
Time
Turnaround time for conceptual illustration varies depending on the amount
of detail and the number of revisions needed to accomplish the desired look
of the project. In most cases conceptual designs and storyboards are made
up of rough drawings which are intended to give an idea of what the finish
product will look like. Conceptual illustration is fast paced work however
sometimes clients will request very tight illustrations that take much longer
to complete.
Guideline for Pricing
Hourly
rate for conceptual illustration: $75 an hour*
*Additional Pricing Info: The hourly rates above are general guidelines for
our services and for changes made by the client after approval of any artwork
produced. Serkworks' prices are based on the project rather than by the hour.
This allows us to adjust the price according to the complexity and size of
the project.
Conceptual illustration is unlike commercial illustration in that in most
cases the artwork produced is not intended to be viewed by the general public.
Not often do you see conceptual illustrations printed on a t-shirt or as part
or an advertising campaign. Conceptual illustration is used in the preproduction
stage of a project's development and serves as a blueprint to the final product.
Because conceptual illustration is not intended to be marketed Serkworks usually
does not charge a usage fee as with commercial illustration. There are however
some exceptions to the rule, for instance a client may commission a concept
drawing of a new home, She then may want to print the drawing and sell the
prints to home owners. In this case a usage fee may apply. (See the section
on usage fees under Commercial Illustration.) In any case Serkworks retains
the right to any physical artwork we produce. The ideas and concepts belong
to the client. The client may wish to purchase the physical artwork for an
agreed upon amount otherwise the artwork is returned to Serkworks following
the end of the production.
Note: Rush jobs usually involve rescheduling projects that Serkworks already
has in progress. Thus in many cases a premium is added. Serkworks may charge
a "cancellation fee" for jobs terminated by the client after work has been
done but before delivery of the final art, equal to 75% of the negotiated
amount. Any additional expenses that are incurred, i.e. messengers, models,
travel etc. will be added to the final payment
The Process
Step One: Assessing the Project:
We discuss the details of your project. Using the details discussed as a basis
Serkworks will provide you with a personalized estimate. After the estimate
is approved and returned to us along with a down payment of 1/3rd of the total
amount of the project we move on to step two.
Step Two: Conception
Serkworks begins this process by fleshing out a few ideas usually in the form
of rough sketches or marker renderings. We will then submit the initial designs
for approval. At this point the client will suggest any alterations he would
like to see. Serkworks will often stipulate the number of revisions allotted
for a particular concept. Any alterations beyond what is stated in the original
agreement will be billed separately. Once the concept is acceptable to you.
We move to the final step. You can ok the final sketches either by email,
post or fax. Once we receive a go ahead from you Serkworks can proceed to
do the final art. Any additional changes made by the client after approval
of the final sketch will be billed at the hourly rate. After approval of the
final sketch we ask that you pay a second installment of 1/3rd of the total
amount of the project.
Step Three: The Presentation
In many cases the conceptual drawings and storyboards is presented to a panel
for approval. Serkworks can professionally mount the concepts to presentation
board or scan them for use in a slide show presentation. Once the final presentation
is complete and you are satisfied with the results Serkworks then receives
the remaining 1/3rd and delivers the artwork on disk or via email.
